HIGHLIGHTS

1. Father-child Reading Corner

Fathers are encouraged to read a story to their children in this reading corner. Each participating father will be given a goodie bag containing a story book, an NLB resource guide on recommended books and tips for father-child reading, a mat, as well as reading-record cards. These cards are for fathers and children to accumulate stamps when they borrow books from NLB libraries and to record their father-child reading sessions. Upon completion of the programme, fathers and children can redeem gifts at NLB libraries.

2. Dad’s Chatroom

A cosy corner for dads to chat and share experiences about fathering, facilitated by local writer Satish Khattar and publisher Goh Eck Kheng from Landmark Books. Satish will launch his book titled ‘O Give Me Patience, but Hurry Please: Practical tips for Longsuffering Parents’. Check out excerpts of this book under Recommended Book. Satish will also be performing a Stand Up routine on the main stage entitled’Fairytale and Fathering’.

3. NLB Junior Reading Ambassadors

Meet these children who have been specially chosen by NLB to help promote and encourage the love of reading to their peers. To prepare for their one-year stint as a Junior Reading Ambassador, they had to undergo a 3-day reading camp. These children will make their maiden appearance at 10000 Fathers Reading!.

4. Frisbee for Families

Participants will learn to how to enjoy the game of Ultimate Frisbee as a family in this new programme launched by South East CDC. Experienced coaches will be on site to teach basic skills and demonstrate the spirit of the game.

The projection of your voice, the eye contacts, the questions and answers…

I think its cool and special. Isn’t it all about bonding!? But I do have to admit, I always seemed to find excuses to hit straight to bed especially after a long day, leaving my children whining. (more…)

Reading… trumps the television everytime!!

I remember reading a lot when I was younger – the Hardy Boys, Enid Blyton to name a few of my favourites. Even now thinking back each book I read gave me an excitement which is difficult to describe. So I want my children to be able to feel some of that before they can pick up a book to read on their own. (more…)

Reading to the kids is something my wife is better at but I am better
at the sound effects and funny faces.

We’ve always believed in inculcating a love of reading to the kids. We
both grew up loving to read too.

But it’s easier said than done sometimes, especially if both of you
work. But we try to make time for it, mostly in the evenings and on
weekends.

All three children, from my oldest Faith (who has autism and is six)
to my two younger ones, Isaac (three and a half) and Joy (17 months),
were read to from birth. Ginny read to them even when they were in her
tummy.

Though Faith cannot talk or read, she loves books and being read to.
Her favourite book is Caroline Uff’s “Hello Lulu”. I have lost track
of how many times I have read that book to her in the last few years.
It’s all tatty and stained with baby saliva now but Faith still makes
me read it to her.

Isaac is a Thomas the Tank Engine fan. He likes to read everything
related to the series, and can identify all the tank engines by name.

Joy likes to look at books with animals in them. She recently gave me
a little surprise when she picked a book out and handed it to me, and
said “Rid!”.

How can Papa say no to a request like that? So we read.
